THE PUZZLE: Dress Up
THE ARTIST: Susan Brabeau – What strikes the viewer first about a Susan Brabeau canvas is her uncanny talent for capturing people. People – their moods, their idiosyncrasies, their body language. The artist enables us to eavesdrop on a series of private moments that have an immediacy even beyond photography or film.
The artist sees herself as a storyteller. “Tales that tug at the heart, fire the imagination and delight the senses,” as she puts it. And throughout her work we find a love for earlier, simpler Victorian times.
In Los Angeles she is best known for her ‘Trompe l’ oeil’ mural outside Miceli’s Restaurant in Universal City. Aside from being a favourite of residents, this mural had almost as much of a career as has the artist herself. It has been the backdrop for news camera crews numerous times: it has featured in the book Wall Art, Twentieth Century Fox used it for their image campaign; Eye on LA did a feature story on it and it was used as a backdrop in the feature film ‘Hot Moves’. Susan Brabeau has done scenic design work for Orion, NBC, Disney and her work in the theatre earned a Drama-Logue award.
Susan Brabeau’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries in New York, New Jersey and throughout southern California and in juried exhibitions in Beverley Hills, Laguna Beach, Studio City, Burbank, Palm Springs, Lake Arrowhead and Pacific Palisades. Susan Brabeau was one of several artists featured in the Barakat Gallery’s Inaugural Group Show.
