The World’s Most Beautiful Jigsaw Puzzle – R M S Titanic – Part of the “Ships that changed the World” Collection.
The Largest passenger steamship of her day – 46,000 tons, with a capacity for 2,450 passengers and 880 crew – and intended for the lucrative transatlantic New York route. Built at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, for White Star Line, she incorporated the most advanced technologies of the time and was completed in March 1912..
On her Maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, USA, she struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank during the night of 15 April, 1912, resulting in the death of over 1,500 people.
The media protests resulting from her demise resulted in changes to maritime safety law, principally that there would be lifeboat capacity for all. Titanic only had lifeboats for 1,200. The picture in the jigsaw puzzle shows Titanic with Southampton in the Background.
The Artist: Chris Woods: 1932 -2008 born in Winchester, Hampshire
Whilst still at school, Chris developed a very keen interest in steam locomotives and consequently many of his spare time hours were spent in touring the engine sheds at Eastleigh, Salisbury and Bournemouth.
Chris was a largely self-taught artist. Most of his working life was taken up in printing and publishing in various parts of the country and in 1984 he began painting full time, thereby enabling him on canvas to resume his early romance with steam railway landscapes and with his proximity to the coast, maritime history.
Chris’s work has been widely published as Signed Limited Edition Prints, Open Edition Prints, Greetings Cards and Jigsaw Puzzles.
