Artist Rien Poortvliet was a Dutch draughtsman and painter. Born in Schiedam, he was best known for his drawings of animals and for “Gnomes” in famous books.
Rien Poortvliet was a ‘drawing storyteller’. As a self taught artist with his own unique stamp, his paintings and water colours were highly successful for many decades. The drawings told the story, with but a caption at most. This provided the blueprint for no less than nineteen books, of which Gnomes gained the most popularity. In line with his success Rien, Poortvliet grew increasingly popular and his diaries and calendars continue to be coveted today. This puzzle by Jumbo honours the gnome books created by Rien Poortvliet.
Rien Poortvliet died in Soest in 1995 of bone cancer at the age of 63.
