JIGSAW PUZZLES – READY TO GET STARTED GLUING YOUR PUZZLE

First things first, you need to pick a Jigsaw Puzzle.  Make sure you pick a puzzle that you enjoy looking at time and time again.  Larger Jigsaw Puzzles, something around 750 to 1000 pieces is great for a framed wall piece, but you could do the same with smaller or larger size Puzzle, the decision is totally personal and all would look fantastic as it is a piece of artwork that you have created.  Panoramic Images for framing and Displaying always look good.

SO LETS GET STARTED

First up, don’t forget to buy your Jigsaw Puzzle Glue. We have several types of glue available here at Puzzle Palace.  You want a glue that seals clear, solid and strong.  If possible, choose a glue that is made by the same manufacturer as your Jigsaw Puzzle.  The glue packaging will indicate the size and number of Jigsaw Puzzles it will cover.

JIGSAW PUZZLES – GLUING YOUR PUZZLE IS EASY

Start by completing one of your favourite Jigsaw Puzzles.  It is a good idea if you intend to frame your Puzzle to make sure you place wax, parchment paper or a piece of thin cardboard sheeting on the surface of where you will be puzzling before you get started.  Remember to leave an extra inch or two all the way around.  This will protect your table or puzzle area from excess glue that may or may not seep through the puzzle piece cracks.  After you have completed the Jigsaw Puzzle, smooth it out and make sure all the pieces fit together nicely.  You can use a rolling pin to make sure the entire Jigsaw Puzzle is as flat as you can get it.  You are now ready to spread the glue.

The easiest way to glue your Jigsaw Puzzle is to pour the glue right on top of the Puzzle and then use a piece of cardboard, business card, spatula or something similar to spread the glue around or follow the instructions that have come with your product.  There is usually a brush attached to the bottle cap which is used to spread the glue along the edges of the jigsaw puzzle or you could just use a cheap art paint brush.  You will want to make sure you cover all of the jigsaw pieces. Don’t miss any!  Once you have started, don’t stop to do anything else, continue until you have finished spreading the glue so the job will not be spoilt.

As long as you are covering everything completely, don’t worry about the immediate look.  You may notice some small air bubbles throughout, but these will normally shrink as the glue dries leaving a nice even finish.  Just be careful not to brush or sponge on too much glue at once.  It is possible to oversaturate the jigsaw puzzles which will cause it to swell or peel.  Make sure you let your jigsaw puzzles dry thoroughly before attempting to handle it.  Some jigsaw puzzle glues will take up to 4 hours to bond, seal and dry property, but in most cases it is ready to me moved in about 2 hours.  After drying you should be able to pick your jigsaw puzzle up – this time in one piece!  Once it is dry, you can use a ruler or a spatula or something similar to separate the jigsaw puzzle from the paper.  That’s it for gluing a puzzle, now it is time to frame.

JIGSAW PUZZLES – HOW DO I FRAME MY PUZZLE?

Many people like to frame completed jigsaw puzzles for display,  There are many ways to do this yourself, or an easy solution is to take it to your local framing store and have it done professionally.  To transport your jigsaw puzzle to a framing store, make sure it is glued first – then sandwich between 2 pieces of cardboard or use one of the many different jigsaw puzzle storage options available, like a jigsaw puzzle case.  Make sure to keep it covered to avoid any damage to the Jigsaw puzzle in the transportation process.

It is recommended having the jigsaw puzzle dry-mounted (adhered to a thick piece of sturdy foam board) before framing to preserve the puzzle seamlessly and ensure no jigsaw pieces fall out.  You can also simply frame your jigsaw puzzle yourself at home by gluing the jigsaw puzzle first then find a frame that fits the puzzle and frame it like you would a poster.  Ideally jigsaw puzzles should be covered with glass or a nice transparent plastic sheet inside the frame because the cover will protect the jigsaw puzzle from fingerprints or scratches.  The cover will also help secure the puzzle and prevent it from collapsing or bowing from within the frame.  Another good tip is to use conservation glass with built-in UV protection which will keep the jigsaw puzzles colours looking vibrant for many years without fading.  Once the jigsaw puzzle is framed, it will look great and last a long time without any worry.

JIGSAW PUZZLES – MOUNTING YOUR PUZZLE without framing

The best way to display your jigsaw puzzle once it is glued is to mount it on a backer board.  Why use a backer board?  If you try to hang the jigsaw puzzle after just gluing, there is a good chance pieces will fall out with time.  A somewhat rigid backer board will help prevent your puzzle from warping!

You have 2 choices for mounting:

Method #1 – You could find a framing store or a similar craft store and ask them to da a “dry mounting”.  Basically they use a special piece of backer board that has heat sensitive adhesive that will glue your jigsaw puzzle to the board instantly.  Job done.

Method #2 –  You could do it yourself.  What you will need to complete this project is a pencil, razor blade, ruler and spray adhesive from a craft store.  Also, purchase a piece of 1/4 inch foam board from your local craft store.  (Do not try and use jigsaw puzzle glue or any other type of liquid glue unless you are going to mount the jigsaw puzzle in a frame.)  The liquid glues can cause the board to warp due to the glue not drying evenly.  Next, position your glued jigsaw puzzle on the backer board and draw an outline with a pencil.  Make sure to mark your line, ever-so-lightly, just inside of your jigsaw puzzle dimensions.  This will help hide your backer board, allowing only your jigsaw puzzle to be seen.  It will also prevent further trimming later on.  This is an important point, as you definitely do not want to try and trim the foam once it has the jigsaw puzzle glued to it.

Now, simply cut out your board.  A straight edge (ruler) and a razor blade work best with the foam board.  The next step is to glue your jigsaw puzzle to the backer board and because you are using a spray adhesive it is recommended you do this in a well ventilated area.  A Good way to do this, is to spread newspaper on the garage floor and then spray the glue onto the foam board.  You are now ready to apply the jigsaw puzzle to the foam board and it can be easier if you have someone to help you so you can get the jigsaw puzzle centred just right.  Keep in mind that the spray adhesive dries much faster than the liquid glues, so read the can to see how long you have before the glue sets.  Once you have it laid down on the board, get the rolling pin and roll over the whole jigsaw puzzle to make sure it bonds well to the board.  Depending on the size of your jigsaw puzzle you may need to apply some weighted objects to ensure the jigsaw puzzle “presses out” nice and flat on your board!  A stock of some good old heavy books would work just fine.  Now, you must let your jigsaw puzzle dry completely.

JIGSAW PUZZLES – TIME TO HANG YOUR JIGSAW PUZZLE UP

You can purchase 3M picture hanging strips.  Because these are Velcro you can easily reposition them to get it level and you do not have to put holes in your wall.  You can also use any other product that you would normally use to hang a picture up on the wall.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT – All of that hard work has paid off and you can now admire your beautiful new piece of art work created Just by You.  ENJOY.
